The bay of Rosas (just north of L’Estartit) and from L’Estartit to Platja de Pals provide ideal locations for windsurfing with almost guaranteed winds off the Pyrenees, particularly in mid-afternoon.
There are windsurfing schools on the beaches in most areas and a centre of excellence for windsurfing and sailing at the Estacio Nauticas. These centres have to achieve a high level of tuition and safety standards and offer a range of watersports.
In recent years the sport of Kite surfing has literally taken off and where you find windsurfers you’ll also see kite surfers skimming over and above the waves.
The soft , sand beaches provide ideal areas for beginners learning how to control the wing-shaped kites and there are several schools offering tuition and equipment hire.
Just north of L’Estartit is an important European wetland area for migrating birds at Aiguamolls d’Emporda. Birdwatchers can observe from various towers placed in strategic positions to watch the wide variety of birds in this protected sanctuary. Bicycle hire is available for those who don’t want to walk this substantial area of rice fields and mixture of marshland and grazing.
The Catalunya coastal walk is a well-marked route popular with walkers of all ages. The coastal scenery is stunning and well kept secret areas like Aiguafreda have both restaurant and cafe facilities for the weary! In summer months car parking at Aiguafreda and Aiguablava are very limited so an early start is needed.
Walk across the bridge at Torroella de Montgri at any time and you’ll see fishing taking place along the banks of the River Ter and on the rock outcrops in the middle of the river. Tourists can obtain a licence from the tourist information offices. You’ll also see fishing off the beach and from the rocks at many local beaches. If you visit the Medes Islands don’t try to fish here as it is forbidden.

The Medes Islands, just off the coast at L’Estartit , are an important marine conservation area and a diver’s paradise. There are several subaqua schools which offer courses from beginners to advanced divers and also offer “taster” sessions to familiarise yourself with the equipment and experience. You can opt for snorkel training and take a trip out to the islands with one of the licensed boats operating from the harbour.
For more information visit:

If you would like to hire a boat to enjoy the scenery and visit those quiet coves that can’t be reached any other way there are several companies in L’Estartit and along the coast to Palamos offering a range of boats.
If you have your own boat and have driven to Spain make sure you have your documentation with you. Boats visiting the Medes islands are not allowed to anchor but there are designated mooring areas around the islands.

Opposite Pitch&Putt Gualta at Torroella de Montgri is an exciting new venture which is already proving very popular. Segway tours take you on an exhilarating ride on one of these unique vehicles. Individuals or larger groups can experience this new mode of transport which puts the fun into sightseeing! Even better we can offer you a 10% discount off the cost. Call us for details.
