ASTURIAS - THE “SWITZERLAND OF SPAIN?”

Located at the north of Spain the Asturias region  is almost  a secret part of Spain with most of the visitors coming from within Spain or from France. It’s a truly beautiful region where rugged mountains flow down to green hills and fields ending with a rugged  Atlantic coastline over 345 km long with dozens of picturesque fine sand  beaches.

The region’s slogan is “Asturias Natural Paradise” and it’s difficult for the visitor  to disagree!

The Picos de Europa, a spectacular mountain range, are only 20 km from the coast. The Covadonga mountain was declared a National Park in July 1918 and was the first protected natural area in Spain or Europe. In fact more than 35% of the entire region is under some form of protection.

From the first Asturian  human settlements in prehistoric times people have left their mark on these  lands in dozens of caves with magnificent cave paintings, in the Celtic “Castros” and in Roman buildings. Local museums reflect the cultural development of the region.

The combination of coastline and fertile soil creates a unique gastronomy for the region which boasts more than 42 cheeses, more than anywhere else in Europe. Then there is the naturally fermented cider, low in alcohol content but with an original method of enhancing the flavour by holding the glass as far away as possible from the bottle when pouring!

Our choice of accommodation ranges from  mountain hut to 5 star hotel or even a luxury cruise by train!

The latter offers a unique experience of seven nights accommodation in a suite on board the train with a full programme of gastronomy, parties, excursions and multilingual guide on a journey from Leon to Santiago or San Sebastian to Santiago.

How to get there

Daily flights from London Stansted are available to Asturias Airport with Easyjet.

Brittany Ferries service to Santander brings you to the easternmost part of the region.

You can drive through France to join the excellent motorway system in northern Spain. The coastal route offers spectacular scenery.
