The Costa Brava

The Costa Brava is the north east section of coastline of Catalonia. It stretches from Portbou near the French border to just north of Blanes which is just above Barcelona. It is the coastline of the Alt Emporda, Baix Emporda and La Selva regions of Catalonia.

The Lake of Banyoles, which was an Olympic rowing venue for the Barcelona Olympics, is a short distance from La Garrotxa. The lake is a tranquil location and easily accessible for walkers. It also offers great opportunities for water sports enthusiasts.

All of the features which make the Costa Brava such an attractive destination for visitors are complemented by the warmth and welcome of the Catalan people. Independent, with a rich cultural heritage and language, Catalans are generous hosts and rightly proud of their region.

In the 1980’s the Costa Brava was seen as a mass tourism destination but has now become a location with a distinct focus on quality and a favourite for independent travellers. The region is easily accessible through airports at Barcelona, Girona ( nearest for the Costa Brava) and Perpignan or via the excellent road system with superb motorways from France. It is now possible to use the high speed train service between London and Barcelona with a convenient stop at Girona only a 30 mile drive from coastal resorts.

The opportunities for sports-lovers are endless. The coastline offers diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, kite-boarding, sailing or  motorboats. There are many schools to cater both for the learner or the more accomplished.

The region has some of the best golf courses in Spain and Costa Brava courses are regularly used by the PGA qualifying school and for major tournaments. The oldest course, Golf Platja de Pals virtually touches the long, sandy beach and is close to Golf Serres de Pals and Emporda Golf. These three courses form a triangle of courses within a short distance of each other and the perfect location for golf breaks or holidays.

The name Costa Brava is taken from the rugged coastline that contains a host of secluded, rocky coves sheltered by pine covered hills. It is a region of extraordinary beauty with a rich cultural heritage the result of centuries of invading armies. Medieval villages perched on hilltops, ancient, lookout towers which kept watch for pirates and fortified farmhouses dot the landscape.

Many visitors are delighted to discover the variety of landscapes in Catalonia. Although the coastline offers magnificent beaches and picturesque coves and inlets, a short drive will take you to the Natural Park of Aiguamolls de L’Emporda where the wetlands form a vital stopping place for a wide range of migratory birds including flamingos.

Further inland you can visit the volcanic Natural Park La Garrotxa a favourite place for walkers through beech woods and past rolling hills.
